The Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov opens the new theater season with the premiere of the play “Cabala” holy man”, based on the play by Mikhail Bulgakov. Hurry up to buy tickets for the play "The Cabal of Hypocrites" and be the first to appreciate the new work!
This production was first presented to the public in 1936, but its success was short-lived. There were only 7 premiere performances, and the play was removed from the repertoire for many years. The complex dramaturgy and sharp social subtext of the work turned out to be inconvenient for critics of that era, and the author, known for his novel "The Life of Monsieur de Moliere", aroused suspicion among the authorities. The play is a kind of phantasmagoria inspired by the life of the famous French playwright Jean-Baptiste Moliere and some of his works ("Don Juan", "The Versailles Impromptu"). Director Yuri Kvyatkovsky skillfully weaves into the narrative motifs of the works of philosopher René Descartes, preacher Girolamo Savonarola, writer Leo Tolstoy and the personal experiences of the author himself, right down to the contents of a letter to Mikhail Bulgakov from Stalin regarding the fate of the play itself.
Theatrical phantasmagoria intertwines the acting fraternity and court conspiracies, the artist's relationship with the authorities, the duality of freedom and slavery, truth and hypocrisy, love and betrayal. Tragedy becomes indistinguishable from farce, and reality from the performance. The play reveals to the viewer a fractal of times: the golden age of Louis XIV, the Soviet 1930s and today, demonstrating the eternal and insoluble paradoxes of creative life.
