Tchaikovsky conceived the idea of ​​​​a new symphony on his way to Russia after a long tour of Europe. The impressions he received on the trip, as well as his own philosophical reflections, formed the basis of this work. In 1888, the premiere of Symphony No. 5 took place. It was favorably received by the audience, although Pyotr Ilyich himself was critical of it.

The symphony consists of three parts and a finale, the main theme of which is the fate of man. At the beginning of the work, fate is presented as evil and inevitable, but by the end it gradually transforms, acquiring bright, life-affirming motives.

Another reflection on fate and destiny will sound in the work of Richard Strauss "Four Last Songs", written much later than Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, in 1948.
