The play "Anna Karenina," directed by Andrei Prikotenko at the Maly Theater, is a modern and innovative take on Leo Tolstoy's classic work. Its premiere took place in November 2025. You can purchase tickets for this play on our website and see a new version of the familiar story about the fates of Anna Karenina, her husband, Alexei Karenin, and her passionate lover, Alexei Vronsky.
The production's unique feature is the atmosphere of a winter blizzard that literally surrounds the audience. The Academic Stage of the Maly Theater is covered in snow, creating the feeling of an endless storm. In this production, Alexei Karenin is radically different from his literary counterpart: instead of cold indifference, we see a sensitive, caring, and emotional man. The era, costumes, and original dialogue have been carefully preserved, despite the challenging task of fitting the content of a vast novel into a three-hour performance.
The director actively utilized the expressive means of plastic art: the actors dance, cry, and gesticulate, emphasizing the characters' intense emotions and the inner conflict of the protagonists. The focus is on the passionate drama between Anna and Vronsky, symbolically embodied by a blizzard that drags the protagonist into the abyss of loneliness and despair.
Audiences will be able to see a new interpretation of the dramatic love story of a married woman, saturated with emotion, movement, and profound meaning.
