Description

The Winter Theatre is a famous Russian cultural venue located in the warm southern city of Sochi. This place is often chosen to host events such as the Kinotavr Film Festival, the Young Ballet of the World competition, the Theatre Olympus in Sochi festival and many other large-scale events.

The theatre, which would later be called the Winter Theatre, was built from September 1934 to November 11, 1937, according to the design of architect K. N. Chernopyatov. Initially, the roof was covered with ceramic tiles, which was eventually replaced with the now familiar red roof. The Winter Theatre hall seats 946 people. The interior is dominated by gold and white colours, which highlight the luxurious interior design. The ceiling is decorated with a large chandelier with crystal pendants, which has more than 300 lamps. The stage, measuring 16 by 18 meters, is clearly visible from any point in the hall.

The grand opening of the hall took place on May 15, 1938, with a performance of the opera "The Tsar's Bride" by N. Rimsky-Korsakov, staged by the famous Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theater named after K. S. Stanislavsky.

The Sochi State Philharmonic, which was registered here in 1968, is also located in this building. About 10 creative groups work there, including the Rachmaninoff String Quartet, famous throughout Russia. Gala concerts of the KiViN festival are also held here.
