Description

The Small Hall of the D.D. Shostakovich St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic is a unique space that is one of the best chamber halls in the world. Its extraordinary acoustics, as well as its historical and cultural value make it indispensable for high-class concerts and events.

The Small Hall is located in a historic mansion on Nevsky Prospekt 30, designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli in the middle of the XVIII century. The room over the years became the center of the cultural life of the city. It hosted balls, masquerades and the first concerts of the Philharmonic Society, such as the premieres of Haydn's oratorio "Creation of the World" and Beethoven's "Solemn Mass". Prince Vasily Engelhardt, the owner of the mansion in the XIX century, collected in his music salon the most famous names of his time - Zhukovsky, Pushkin, Lermontov, Turgenev, Rubinstein and many others.

Brilliant masquerades and concerts held here attracted the attention of the royal family and famous musicians. In the XX century, the Philharmonic Hall continued its historical role, and on May 15, 1949, the name of the great composer Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka was immortalized in the Small Hall.

The Small Hall of the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic named after D.D. Shostakovich has since become a place for outstanding concerts and premieres. The world stars of musical art have performed here and continue to perform - Richter, Gilels, Gould, Ashkenazi, Neuhaus, Sokolov, Virsaladze, Rostropovich, Oistrakh, Bashmet and many others.

The Small Hall is a venue for premieres of works of the XX and XXI centuries by such composers as Shostakovich, Sviridov, Shchedrin, Petrov, Tishchenko, Slonimsky. International music festivals and competitions are held here, which attract the attention of both famous musicians and classical music lovers.
