About event

The Chamber Orchestra of the Philharmonic Academic Symphony Orchestra will perform on May 22, 2024 in the Small Hall of the D.D. Shostakovich Philharmonic. This outstanding collective of the honored collective of Russia has been impressing listeners with its professionalism and musical skill for more than 50 years.

There have been changes in the leadership of the orchestra on several occasions. The head of the orchestra was Yuri Kramarov, an outstanding violist, after which he was replaced by violinist Lev Gozman. At first, the orchestra's repertoire consisted of works from the XVII–XVIII centuries. But even then the orchestra differed from other collectives in that it performed without a conductor. However, at certain concerts the ensemble received instructions from such famous conductors as Gennady Rozhdestvensky, David Oistrakh and Rodion Shchedrin. Over time, the orchestra's repertoire has become richer and works by contemporary composers, both domestic and foreign, have appeared in it. It was the first Leningrad collective to perform Shostakovich's Fourteenth Symphony. The band has collaborated with such outstanding musicians as Yuri Temirkanov, Emil Gilels, Zofia Dolukhanova, Ekaterina Obraztsova, Elisi Virsaladze and Barbara Hendrix.

Since 1996, the orchestra has been inextricably linked with Leo Kremer. He conducted concerts with the collective outside of Russia and presented to the public of St. Petersburg such works as "The Passion for Matthew", "The Passion for John", "Mass in B Minor" and "Christmas Oratorio" by J.S. Bach, oratorio "Judas Maccabeus" by G.F. Handel. His interpretation included works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Brahms. In addition, the premiere of Franz Schubert's Seventh Symphony took place in St. Petersburg.
