The play "Romeo and Juliet in the Dark" at the Theater of Europe is an unusual composition by Lev Dodin, inspired by the works of Shakespeare and other famous authors, such as Otchenashek, Astafyev and Solzhenitsyn. The production invites viewers to immerse themselves in a world of endless hostility and wars, where the love of Romeo and Juliet encounters insurmountable obstacles.

The play begins with energetic mass rock and roll, followed by a scene from the first act of Romeo and Juliet, where Romeo, dressed as a monk, kisses Juliet for the first time. Set designer Alexander Borovsky and street artist Nick Kasyanenko created a space on the stage with concrete walls and graffiti, which is reminiscent of the interpretation of Baz Luhrmann's film Romeo + Juliet.

However, in Dodin's production, the story of Romeo and Juliet is intertwined with the destinies of other couples in love. The audience will see Pavel and Esther from the story by Jan Otcenasek, the Turk and the Greek woman from the work by Elif Shafak, as well as the characters by Viktor Astafyev. These scenes are filled with emotional depth and sensuality, requiring the young actors to fully immerse themselves in their roles.

The performance ends with a dark finale, where the characters are doomed, but this is not only a tragic statement, but also an opportunity to see the future stars of the Maly Drama Theater in the process of creating a new theatrical language.
