The play "The Lower Depths" at the Alexandrinsky Theater is a return to one of the most significant plays of the 20th century, written by Maxim Gorky. Artistic director Nikita Kobelev offers viewers a new interpretation of the classic work, which remains relevant today. This production is the third interpretation of the play on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, which emphasizes its importance and significance for Russian theatre.

The Alexandrinsky Theatre, located in the historical center of St. Petersburg, is known for its rich history and unique atmosphere, which makes it an ideal venue for staging such a deep and multi-layered work. The performance will transport the audience to a world where the characters, who find themselves on the sidelines of life, face difficult questions of love, death, truth and lies. The stranger Luka, who appears in their midst, becomes a catalyst for change, awakening in them a desire for life and the search for new landmarks.

Nikita Kobelev's approach to the production is distinguished by special attention to the current meanings of the work. The director strives to move away from the traditional naturalistic reading, offering the audience a figurative and conventional theatrical language. This allows us to make the story closer and more understandable to the modern viewer.
