Performance «Masquerade, Memories of the Future» at the Alexandrinsky Theater is a large-scale project conceived by the artistic director of the theater Valery Fokin. The project opened the program of the Eighth International Theater Festival in the year of the 200th anniversary of the birth of M. Yu. Lermontov. The main goal of the production — creation of a stage composition accumulating the experience of the legendary performance staged by Vsevolod Meyerhold in February 1917.

The performance uses visual images and mise-en-scène motifs from the production score of “Masquerade” Meyerhold, recreating as accurately as possible the scenography, music and rhythm of the original. This allows modern viewers to take an expedition into the past. Modern artistic and technological theatrical techniques revive one of the most harmonious performances of the past, conveying it in all its versatility. An important part of the production was the new life of the collection of theatrical costumes and props for the play “Masquerade”. 1917, recreated according to sketches by A. Ya. Golovin.

A study of the great performance of the early twentieth century in «Masquerade, Memories of the Future» combined with deep insight into the problems of today. Text "Masquerade" sounds from the lips of the heroes of the 1917 performance and by modern artists. Arbenin, played by the luminary of the Alexandrinsky Theater Yuri Mikhailovich Yuryev, and Arbenin of the 21st century pronounce words written by a 26-year-old poet in the 19th century, which remain relevant today.

The Alexandrinsky Theater offers a unique opportunity to see this performance on its historical stage. The theater is located in the center of St. Petersburg and is one of the oldest theaters in Russia, which gives the event additional significance and atmosphere. Spectators will be able to enjoy not only the outstanding production, but also the majestic architecture of the theater.
