The opera Fidelio is the only opera by Ludwig van Beethoven that has remained relevant for centuries. In a new production at the Hermitage Theater, director Irina Fokina and artistic director Sergei Stadler transfer the action to St. Petersburg in 1825, which gives the plot a special historical depth. This choice of era is not accidental: the events of the December uprising are surprisingly in tune with the ideas of the composer and the Great French Revolution.
The main character, Florestan, like the Decembrists, strives for freedom and justice, fighting for his ideals. However, the key focus in the opera is on the feat of Leonora, who, under the name of Fidelio, enters the prison to save her husband. Her dedication and love become a symbol of personal heroism, which is opposed to large-scale revolutionary ideas.
The production at the Hermitage Theatre combines magnificent historical costumes with modern video projections and chronicle inserts, creating a unique atmosphere. This allows the viewer to dive deeper into the era and feel its spirit. Beethoven's opera, written in an oratorio-symphonic style, requires the highest skill from the performers, which makes each performance a real event.
The St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of People's Artist of Russia Sergei Stadler, as well as the ensemble of soloists "Christmas" and the ensemble "Barynya" create a unique musical palette that complements the dramatic action on stage.
The history of Russian productions of Fidelio is not eventful, which makes this production especially significant. In the 21st century, Beethoven's opera comes to life again on the stage of the Hermitage Theater, attracting the attention of both connoisseurs of classical music and the general public.
