Description
The Hermitage Theatre is a unique theatre building located in the heart of St. Petersburg, on the corner of the Palace Embankment and the Winter Canal (house No. 32). Built in 1783-1789 according to the design of the outstanding Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi, this building completes the complex of buildings along the Neva River, harmoniously connecting with the Winter Palace by arches and passages.
Erected by order of Empress Catherine II, the Hermitage Theatre became an important cultural centre of Russia in the late 18th century. The theatre opened on 16 November 1785 with the premiere of A. Ablesimov's comic opera The Miller, the Sorcerer, the Deceiver and the Matchmaker, despite the unfinished interior decoration. Opera, ballet and drama productions took place on the theatre stage, many of which were written by the empress herself.
The history of the Hermitage Theatre is closely connected with the name of the Italian artist Pietro di Gottardo Gonzaga, who was invited to St. Petersburg to create the scenery. Since 1808, the theatre began to host New Year's masquerades, which attracted the attention of the public.
The Hermitage Theatre became a venue for performances by many famous dramatic actors, such as I. A. Dmitrevsky, J. Offren, P. A. Plavilshchikov, S. N. Sandunov, T. M. Troepolskaya, Ya. D. Shumsky and A. S. Yakovlev. The famous F. I. Chaliapin also sang on this stage.
Today, the Hermitage Theatre continues to delight its audiences with high-class productions. The schedule and playbill can be found on our website. You can buy tickets online, securing your place at one of the most prestigious theatrical events in the city.
