"Dead Souls": Gogol's satire in galloping rhythm on the Vakhtangov stage!
In the year of the theater's centennial, the premiere of the play became a true cultural event. The production's uniqueness lies in its unusual format. The entire diverse world of Gogol's poem, from the cunning Chichikov to the vibrant portrayals of landowners and officials, is brought to life on stage by just two actors—the magnificent Maria Aronova and her son, Vladislav Gandrabura. This duo creates a true hymn to the art of acting and the magic of transformation.
The play captivates the audience even before the action begins, drawing them into a whimsical world of fantasy and reality. Maxim Obrezkov's minimalist and expressive set design uses only a few chairs, a table, and a screen, allowing the focus to be on the actors' outstanding performances. Masks created using 3D scanning of the actors' faces play a key role. Thanks to these masks, Aronova and Gandrabura instantly change characters, becoming Manilov, Korobochka, and Sobakevich.
The role of Chichikov is not assigned to a single performer; the actors pass it on to each other like a baton, reflecting the various stages of the character's life and development. This continuous flow of transformations is not just a technical device, but a profound symbolic gesture. On stage, Gogol himself comes to life, trying on the images of his characters—after all, they are all figments of his imagination and extensions of his authorial self.
The play's script, created by Vladimir Ivanov and Andrei Tupikov, departs from traditional stage adaptations. Vyacheslav Zhukov's music occupies a special place in the production, subtly conveying the poem's mood—from ironic to tragic.
"Dead Souls" at the Vakhtangov Theatre is a vibrant, dynamic, and incredibly funny show that nevertheless preserves the philosophical depth of Gogol's original text. This bold interpretation of the classic demonstrates the timeless relevance of great literature. Consistent sold-out performances testify to the audience's delight in this theatrical performance, where talent, imagination, and a boundless love for the art of the stage reign supreme.
