Vyacheslav Zhukov's music conveys the mood of the poem, becoming increasingly tragic towards the end, reminding us that retribution for deception is inevitable, that the dead souls are not actually those that Chichikov bought, but those who sold them to him, not disdaining anything for the sake of profit.
