Fascinating Gogol: the carnival of Dead Souls performed by Aronova and Gandrabura.

The performance amazes with its chamber power. On stage, Maria Aronova and Vladislav Gandrabura, mother and son in real life, brilliantly embody the characters from Gogol's gallery. Chichikov with his cunning, Nozdryov with his insatiable desires, Manilov in his dreams, Korobochka with his stinginess, Sobakevich in an epic scale and Plyushkin, exhausted by life - they all come to life thanks to virtuoso acting. In this production, there are no historical costumes or scenery; the emphasis is on eternal human images and passions, brought to the point of grotesque.

Each character is recognizable by their gait, gestures and posture. The timbre of the voice, intonation and dialects vary from a quiet whisper to a thunderous cry. Only a few details - a scarf, a cane or an item of clothing - help the actors create new characters. This is not just a play of images; this is a deep dive into the essence of the characters, where the actors become conductors of Gogol's world of Dead Souls.

The director focused not so much on the plot as on the energy of Gogol's text, its rhythm and hidden emotions. The action unfolds rapidly, like a dashing troika: sometimes turning into a perky dance, sometimes turning into a gloomy procession. Comedy becomes an existential horror of emptiness, and buffoonery becomes touching lyricism. For Vladimir Ivanov, Dead Souls is not just a satire on bureaucracy; it is a parable about the human soul, lost in search of meaning among passions and deception. Chichikov's desire to accumulate dead souls symbolizes our own spiritual apathy and compromises with ideals. The stage turns into a space for reflection on the eternal.

The set design (created by Ivanov's faithful comrade) impresses with its minimalism and symbolism. The empty space of the stage becomes a road or a living room thanks to the imagination of the viewer and the skill of the director.

Technical effects in the play are used not for the sake of spectacle, but as a continuation of the metaphor: swirls of leaves or paper, sudden rays of light, shadows in mirrors and the sounds of a bell or the creaking of a cart create a sense of movement and the illusory nature of Chichikov's enterprise.

Seeing Maria Aronova and Vladislav Gandrabura in such skill is a real stroke of luck. This is the highest level of acting and ensemble. The play "Dead Souls" at the Vakhtangov Theater is a powerful theatrical reinterpretation of the classics. The duo of actors transforms the stage into a reflection of human passions and absurdity, which leaves a deep impression.

Tickets for the play "Dead Souls" at the Vakhtangov Theater are your pass to a unique theatrical experiment, where images of Russian classics come to life and the pulse of modernity is felt. This is an experience that makes you think about the power of art and admire it.
