The Theatre of Nations has been successfully performing the play “Shukshin’s Stories” for 17 years now, and it has become a real theatrical phenomenon.

In November 2008, the Moscow public witnessed an important cultural event: the premiere of the play "Shukshin's Stories" staged by the talented Latvian director Alvis Hermanis took place on the stage of the Theatre of Nations. The play instantly won the recognition and love of the audience, becoming one of the significant events in the theatrical life of that time. The uniqueness and sincerity of the production are largely due to the careful preparatory work. In order to better understand their characters and their surroundings, the creative team went on a journey through Altai, the writer's native lands. It is there, among the Altai villages, that the descendants of the people whose images were so vividly and lovingly described by Shukshin still live. The play is based on ten selected stories by the author: "Stepkina's Love", "Boots", "Microscope", "I Beg Your Pardon, Madam", "Ignakha Has Arrived", "Fingerless", "The Wife Saw Her Husband Off to Paris", "The Stem", "The Old Lady Saw Her Mother Off on Sunday" and "Stepka". The script, developed by Hermanis together with the famous critic and playwright Roman Dolzhansky, carefully combined these works into a single dramatic composition.

The play is a series of stories replacing each other. The stage mise-en-scènes smoothly change before the eyes of the audience: some scenery is replaced by others with elegant minimalism. The key element of the design is a simple wooden bench, around which movable installations with large photographs are placed. This deliberate simplicity of the artistic solution not only does not detract from the expressiveness of the stage, but on the contrary emphasizes the sincerity, simplicity and incredible spiritual depth of the characters from Shukshin's works.
