The Vakhtangov Theatre will be showing the play “Eugene Onegin” from May 29 to July 3, directed by Rimas Tuminas
The play takes place both in the present and in the past, creating a unique interweaving of reality and the characters' imagination. Rimas Tuminas, known for his metaphorical theatrical worlds, sees in Eugene Onegin not only a love story, but also a tragedy of loneliness, misunderstanding and fatal accidents. Tuminas's arrival at the Vakhtangov Theatre in 2007 was a landmark event: he not only revived the theatre, but also opened the new Simonov Stage in 2017. Under his leadership, such important productions as Troilus and Cressida, Uncle Vanya, Masquerade and others appeared on the stage, which were highly praised by both Russian and international critics.
In the play, each actor creates a unique image with deep psychological development. Thanks to several casts, viewers can see different performers in the roles of the main characters. The production features two Onegins: the older character recalls the events of the past, while the younger one lives them on stage. The same is done with Lensky: the audience will see both a young dreamer and a mature man.
Music plays a key role in creating the atmosphere of the play. Composer Faustas Latenas together with Vadim Bulikov created a musical design that emphasizes the emotional moments of the production. Particularly impressive are the scenes of the duel and the Moscow waltz with Tchaikovsky's musical theme.
Work on this play lasted for several years. The director and actors carefully studied Pushkin's text, trying to convey its deep meaning to the modern viewer. According to Tuminas's idea, a new character was added - a retired hussar, who acts as a narrator and conveys the author's words to the audience.
The visual part of the performance also deserves attention: the set design by Adomas Jackovys includes a huge mirror and a ballet barre, and the costumes by Maria Danilova received critical acclaim. For their work, the artists were awarded the Golden Mask Award in 2014.
Tickets for this unusual performance are still available for purchase both offline and online.
