Alfred Schnittke created this masterpiece in the wake of his deep interest in sacred music. In the process, he strove for a «new simplicity», abandoning citationism and polystylistics, which gave his work a unique sound. The Concert is based on the «Book of Mournful Hymns» by the Armenian medieval poet, philosopher and theologian Grigor Narekatsi. Narekatsi's poetry, filled with severe asceticism, combined with Schnittke's Byzantine musical elements, creates a powerful emotional and spiritual effect.
