The world premiere of the ballet «The Seagull»: in classical and modern guise

The world premiere of the ballet «The Seagull» took place on July 1, 2021 at the Bolshoi Theatre. Part of the audience has long been familiar with the plot of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's classic play, but this time each of the choreographers once again highlighted a different theme. The story of Nina Zarechnaya and her passionate search for creative fulfillment comes to life on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre in a new guise.

In 1980 Rodion Shchedrin created the score of the ballet of the same name, and the production was realized by Maya Plisetskaya, who became the performer of the main role. This ballet became so successful that it toured extensively, visiting several European theaters. In 2002, another landmark version of The Seagull appeared at John Neumeier's Hamburg Ballet.

In 2007 Boris Eifman offered his interpretation of «The Seagull», where the events take place in contemporary Russian reality. He created a performance about perestroika and young rebel poets who face the challenges of modernity.

The current version of «The Seagull» at the Bolshoi Theater continues the tradition, but at the same time reproduces the psychology and philosophy of the classical characters. Tom Pye's scenography hints at the presence of some interval between the time of the play and the time of the ballet. The place of action is also conditional and can be not only a Russian village, but also an American province.
