Immersion in the world of life and tragedy with the play “Funeral Prayer”

This performance is based on the play by Grigory Gorin, which in turn was written based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem called “Tevye the Milkman”. In 1989, Mark Zakharov staged this performance, which is still one of the most striking and memorable works on stage.

The play takes place in the poor town of Anatovka at the beginning of the 20th century, during the period of anti-Semitic sentiments and Jewish pogroms. The main character, milkman Tevye, quotes Scripture and strives to secure the future of his daughters through successful marriages. However, traditional methods do not work, and the daughters themselves make decisions about their fate. The eldest daughter refuses a “profitable” marriage with a rich butcher and marries a poor tailor. The middle daughter chooses a Kyiv revolutionary student, and the youngest, having fallen in love with a Russian clerk, betrays her father's faith and marries an Orthodox Christian.

Tevye cannot forgive his youngest daughter for her apostasy and decides to serve a funeral service. However, unexpectedly, the king issued a decree demanding that all Jews leave the province. Before the tests, Tevye forgives his daughter and, together with his family and other Jews from Anatovka, collects his things to start a new life in another place.

The play “Funeral Prayer” is not only an amazing story, but also an excellent performance by the actors. In the roles you will see the talented Sergei Stepanchenko, Andrei Leonov, Vladimir Yumatov, Viktor Rakov, Olesya Zheleznyak, Alexander Sirin, Anna Bolshova and Ivan Agapov. The director of the play is Alexander Lazarev.

Don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the early 20th century and feel the emotions of the characters. Purchase tickets on our website and witness this amazing performance. We will be glad to see you at the Lenkom Theater!
