In St. Petersburg, "The Ring of the Nibelung" will be performed in an unusual format, along with an oratorio based on Brodsky's poems.
The musicAeterna orchestra, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, will perform at the Great Hall of the Shostakovich Philharmonic, shattering the stereotype of the German composer's music as gloomy and ponderous.
The highlight of the evening will be the performance of the 70-minute symphonic suite "Ring Without Words." This work, created in 1987 by conductor and composer Lorin Maazel, represents the quintessence of Wagner's entire operatic tetralogy, "Der Ring des Nibelungen." Maazel has preserved the sequence of events in this epic saga with pinpoint precision, paying particular attention to the orchestral fragments.
The suite's unique feature lies in its original interpretation of the vocal parts: they were not excluded, but transferred to various musical instruments. For example, Sieglinde's voice will be represented by the flute, Siegfried's role will be played by the trombone, and the bass clarinet will convey the image of the giant Fafner. This approach allows listeners to be fully immersed in Wagner's musical dramaturgy, without being distracted by vocal parts and plot twists. It is interesting to note that Wagner himself created concert versions from excerpts from his operas.
The concert program will be complemented by a work by the Russian-German composer Katja Chamberdji. Her oratorio "Nur zu weinen und zu singen..." ("Only to weep and sing..."), based on the poetry of Joseph Brodsky, will be performed. This work will form a contemporary musical dialogue with Wagner's monumental work.
