The play takes place in 1183 in England, during the Christmas festivities. The aging King Henry II must choose his heir, and the entire royal family gathers for this important moment. Meet King Henry and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, who spent ten years in prison for participating in a conspiracy against her husband, as well as their sons: Richard the Lionheart, Geoffrey and John. All family members hate each other, but they are united by a thirst for power and a willingness to commit any betrayal for its sake.
The play premiered on Broadway in 1966 and was filmed in 1968 by the outstanding director Anthony Harvey. The film stars such stars as Peter O'Toole, Katherine Helburn and Anthony Hopkins.
The play «The Lion in Winter,» staged in 2020 by the famous director Sergei Ginzburg, is a new modern interpretation of this play.
