About event

The play “Scenes from a Dead House” at the Baltic House Theater is a unique production created as part of the “Experimental Stage” project. Plus" with the support of the Russian Cultural Foundation. The premiere is timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky.

Based on Dostoevsky’s work “Notes from the House of the Dead,” the play takes viewers into the dark realities of convict life. Dostoevsky wrote this story in 1861, after returning from the Omsk prison, where he spent four years on political business. Having personally experienced the horrors of hard labor, the writer created a work that became the “book of the century.”

The plot centers on Alexander Petrovich Goryanchikov, convicted of murdering his wife. Having served his sentence, he devotes the rest of his life to writing a diary in which he describes the fates of his cellmates. The play shows the diversity of human destinies: guilty and innocent, cold-blooded killers and seasoned smugglers, dashing thieves and intelligent counterfeiters. Each character shares his story, as if in a confession, revealing his soul to the audience.

The play “Scenes from a Dead House” is a deep immersion into the world of human suffering and hope. The production makes you think about the nature of man, about his ups and downs, about how circumstances can change fate.
