The play was recognized as a "victory" for its successful mastery of serious dramaturgy, which was unusual for the operetta genre.
The libretto was based on a play by J.B. Shaw, which, in turn, was based on the ancient myth of the sculptor Pygmalion and his ideal statue Galatea. After the musical adaptation, the story received a new round of popularity, especially after the premiere on Broadway in 1956. The play lasted 2,717 performances over six years, which became a record.
