The play “Connecting Rods” at the Baltic House Theater-Festival is a striking example of experimental theater, where young directors under the direction of Anatoly Praudin bring bold and relevant ideas to life on stage. Staged by Rinat Kiyakov, created as part of the project “Experimental Stage. Plus,” explores the eternal questions of human existence and the desire to understand the “super secret.”
The heroes of the play “Connecting Rods” resemble teenage maximalists for whom earthly comfort is not enough. They long to unravel the mysteries of the universe, but are faced with insurmountable barriers that life puts before them. Questions “Rus, where are you going?” and “Am I a trembling creature or do I have the right?” become the central themes around which the action unfolds. The heroes, having not found answers, continue their journey, facing the unknown and the inevitable.
An American critic once remarked: “The world is not ready to read this novel. And I wouldn’t want to live in a world that would be willing to read this novel.” Perhaps the time for “Shatunov” has already come, and viewers are ready for a deep dive into Mamleev’s philosophical reflections. The performance invites everyone to think about the fact that in every person there is a piece of goodness that can be awakened.
