The play "Pound of Meat" on the Second Stage of the BDT is a fascinating theatrical performance, where verbal duels and text battles transport the viewer to the world of carnival and fairground. The production, based on William Shakespeare's play "The Merchant of Venice", is reinterpreted by director Nastasya Khrushcheva, creating a unique atmosphere in which there is no right and guilty.
In the play "Pound of Flesh", each character takes part in a carnival performance, where serious problems and sore points of society are ridiculed and zeroed out. Carnival, as Mikhail Bakhtin wrote, is the laughing and festive life of the people. It is a space where any conflicts and contradictions can be turned upside down and ridiculed.
The plot of the play unfolds around the famous episode from "The Merchant of Venice", where the merchant Antonio borrows a large sum of money from the moneylender Shylock. If the debt is not repaid on time, Shylock has the right to cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's body. In Khrushcheva's interpretation, this idea takes on new dimensions: all characters have the opportunity to cut out a piece of flesh, which makes the performance even more intense and dynamic.
"A Pound of Meat" is not just a performance, but a game in which every spectator can take part. The carnival atmosphere and the absence of restrictions on the number of participants make the production truly exciting and interactive.
