The play "I was in the house and waited for the rain to come" at the G. A. Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater is a deeply philosophical production exploring the theme of waiting and inaction. The play tells the story of five women whose lives are consumed by the expectation of a man's return. Their hopes for change and improvement in their lives are tied to this event that may never happen.
The French title of the play includes the word "subjonctif", which means an action that a person would like to carry out without knowing whether it will actually happen. This emphasizes the illusory nature of the heroines' existence. They live in a world of memories of the past and dreams of the future, but nothing happens to them in the present. Their lives have stopped at the point of waiting, which may never bring results.
The production at the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater is distinguished by its special atmosphere and deep psychological insight. It makes the audience think about the meaning of life and how often we ourselves find ourselves in the trap of waiting.
