About event
On December 21, a significant cultural event will take place at the State Academic Chapel — concert of the Fifth Subscription “Music and Words”. As part of this event, an oratorio based on the film “Ivan the Terrible”, one of the most outstanding works of Sergei Prokofiev, will be performed. This work was the composer's last collaboration with the legendary director Sergei Eisenstein.
Movie "Ivan the Terrible" began filming in 1942 under conditions of evacuation in Kazakhstan and was released in January 1945, becoming a classic of world cinema. The first episode of the film was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1946, but the second episode was banned and was released only in 1958. The music for the film was not published during Prokofiev’s lifetime, and only in 1961 did conductor Abram Stasevich compose a single piece from individual musical fragments — oratorio "Ivan the Terrible" for choir, orchestra and reader.
The concert program will also include Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 Sergei Rachmaninov. This work, along with Prokofiev’s oratorio, promises to be a real musical feast for all lovers of classical music.
