The operetta "Baroness Lili" at the Musical Comedy Theater (St. Petersburg) is a striking example of classical Hungarian operetta. Created by the outstanding composer Jenő Huska in 1919, it quickly gained popularity due to its melodic music and witty libretto. This work is rightfully considered the pearl of the composer's fifteen operettas, especially in his native Hungary.
The plot of "Baroness Lili" is built around comic and romantic twists and turns. After the death of his father, a ruined count, his son Laszlo, a young playwright, is forced to sell the family castle. The new owner, a former shopkeeper and now Baron Malomszegi, dreams of marrying his daughter Lili to the count, not suspecting that Laszlo is that very count. As a result of an accidental misunderstanding, Laszlo is mistaken for a valet, and he decides to play along with the new owners, seeing in this a potential plot for his operetta.
However, the situation becomes complicated when Laszlo falls in love with Lili, who, in turn, confides her secret to him and asks for help in escaping from the castle. Lili does not want to marry a stranger, dreaming of a career as an actress. Laszlo promises to help her, and their adventure together develops into true love that overcomes all obstacles.
