On the stage of the St. Petersburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after. M.P. Mussorgsky – The Mikhailovsky Theater will host the opera “Iolanta” P.I. Tchaikovsky to the libretto by M.I. Tchaikovsky based on the drama by G. Hertz “King René’s Daughter.”
Opera “Iolanta” is the last work of the great composer, and is still considered one of the most repertoire and beloved among performers and audiences.
From the point of view of the musical part, all the canons of the libretto are observed in the composition, the melodies are simple, beautiful and easy to remember. The world premiere of the opera took place in December 1892 on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater, and at the Mikhailovsky Theater the premiere took place on July 14, 2005.
The plot is based on a romantic story, which will once again show viewers that love – one of the most powerful feelings that can overcome any life obstacles. The action takes place in southern France in the 15th century. The story tells about the daughter of King Rene, who was born blind. Young Iolanta does not know about her illness and does not feel disadvantaged among the other residents of the palace. Those around her, under the threat of death, hide her imperfections from the girl and even avoid words related to vision. The appearance of a young knight in the castle will change her life forever.
The unknown power of love will allow you to overcome mental pain and fear, literally healing Iolanta. At the end, the choir glorifies the victory of light over darkness, purity and morality. Opera "Iolanta" will give the audience bright feelings and faith in the best. The combination of acting, vocal performance, music, costumes and scenery will not leave any viewer indifferent!
