The production by director Andrey Moguchy based on the play by P.P. Gnedich "Kholopy" at the G.A. Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater caused a real sensation in the theater world. This performance, which cannot be seen anywhere except at the BDT, amazes the audience with sets that dissolve right before their eyes and continuous action that does not even allow for an intermission. The play by Pyotr Gnedich, an author who lived from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, is rarely chosen by theater directors for productions, despite the fact that a film-performance was made based on it in 1987.

This time, Andrei Moguchy strictly adheres to the text of the play, not allowing himself any deviations, contrary to his usual traditions. However, in the design of the stage, costumes and musical accompaniment, Moguchy maintains his steadfastness. The viewer will hear the music of Antonio Vivaldi. Monochrome costumes, simple and unlike the fashion of the previous century, emphasize the director's unique views on the action. However, the main attention should be paid to the scenery, which makes the performance "non-travel-friendly". The large estate of the main characters, the Plavutin-Plavuntsov family, changes before the eyes of the audience from a period of complete prosperity at the beginning of the 19th century to destruction and oblivion, and in the end it disappears altogether.

But for now, in the last days of the reign of Paul I, the Plavutin-Plavuntsov estate is enlivened by everyday bustle. The emperor himself is unaware of the discontent in his entourage. The mistress of the house, Princess Ekaterina Pavlovna, rules over her subjects, while her brother suffers from underestimated servility at court. His son spends his fortune, while domination, servility and fear rule the world in this show.
