The story of the operetta "Princess Csardas" at the Musical Comedy Theatre resembles a gripping novel, full of unexpected twists and dramatic moments. This immortal masterpiece by Imre Kalman, better known on the Russian stage as "Silva" or "The Csardas Queen", comes to life again in the theatre's new production, attracting the attention of spectators of all ages.
The premiere of "Princess Csardas" took place in 1915 at the Johann Strauss Theatre in Vienna. The operetta immediately won the hearts of the audience and soon became popular around the world under different names. In Russia, it became known as "Silva", and since then this name has firmly entrenched itself in the memory of viewers. First shown in Petrograd in 1917, the operetta became a symbol of the era and has not lost its relevance to this day.
The Musical Comedy Theatre first included "Silva" in its repertoire in 1940. During the years of the siege and the following decades, this work became an integral part of the city's cultural heritage. Each new production brought something of its own, but the audience's love for this story remained unchanged.
In 1954, a new libretto for "The Csardas Queen" was created in Budapest especially for the benefit performance of prima donna Hanna Honti. In this version, the main role was given to Cecilia, Edvin's mother, played by Honti. Silva faded into the background, and the roles of Mishka and Feri were significantly expanded. Numbers from other operettas by Kalman were added to the score, which gave the performance a new flavor. This version also found a response among Soviet viewers and became part of their cultural heritage.
The modern production of "The Csardas Princess" at the Musical Comedy Theatre returns us to the original title and the updated Russian text of the libretto. The confrontation between the heroes and society is dramatically heightened, while sentimental reflections on the past are kept to a minimum, allowing you to focus on the main conflict.
