About event

The Mikhailovsky Theatre of St. Petersburg invites you to the incredible classical ballet Romeo and Juliet in 2 acts to music by Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev, based on William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name, in the theater's own production.

Nominated for the Golden Mask in several categories, Nacho Duato's ballet Romeo and Juliet has been one of the Mikhailovsky Theatre's brightest and most moving productions for several years now. It is not surprising, therefore, that tickets for Romeo and Juliet are so eagerly sought after by audiences - after all, this is an opportunity not only to enjoy the timeless beauty of Prokofiev's music and Shakespeare's timeless love story, but also to appreciate the innovative approach to staging by one of the leading choreographers of our time.

The dramatic story of Romeo and Juliet unfolds against the backdrop of Italian city life, which does not stop for a second: lyrical scenes alternate with pictures of street festivals in the spirit of commedia dell'arte, which are rudely invaded by clashes between rival clans. The story is not so much about the love between Romeo and Juliet, but about the fact that love can triumph over hate. Because through the love of these two young people, families who have been feuding for years are reconciled.

The ballet vividly reveals the main conflict of Shakespeare's tragedy - the clash of bright love with the tribal enmity of the older generation, characterizing the savagery of the medieval way of life.

The ballet Romeo and Juliet is still relevant in its aesthetics, language and, of course, Shakespeare's immortal plot.
