The operetta "The Circus Princess" returns to the stage of the Musical Comedy Theatre in St. Petersburg, offering viewers the opportunity to enjoy one of Imre Kalman's most beloved and popular works. For the first time, the work will be presented as close to the original author's version as possible, including music, libretto and title.
The plot of "The Circus Princess" unfolds in 1912 in St. Petersburg. A wealthy widow, Feodora Palinskaya, appears at a performance by a mysterious masked artist. In order to preserve her inheritance, she must marry a compatriot within six weeks of her husband's death. Grand Duke Sergei Nikolaevich, whom Feodora has repeatedly refused, decides to disgrace her by arranging a marriage with a circus performer, whom he passes off as a Russian prince. But under the mask of Mister X is hidden a hereditary nobleman and a Russian officer.
The premiere of the operetta took place in 1926 in Vienna, and in Russia it was seen a year later in a significantly altered form. Today, the creative team of the Musical Comedy Theater decided to restore the author's version, returning the action to pre-revolutionary Petersburg of the early 20th century.
The director of the new version will be Olga Subbotina, and the artist of the performance will be the master from Japan Yoko Seama. Particular attention will be paid to the circus context of the story, for which professional circus artists have been invited. The musical director is Honored Artist of Russia Andrei Alekseev.
