Nikolai Alekseev, People's Artist of Russia and laureate of the International Competition of the Herbert von Karajan Foundation, is one of the key figures in the world of classical music. Chief conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, he has extensive experience and recognition in the international arena. Laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Estonia in the field of culture, Nikolai Alekseev is known for his deep interpretations and impeccable craftsmanship.

Nikolai Alekseev's creative activity began with victories at international competitions, such as the competition of the Herbert von Karajan Foundation (West Berlin, 1982), named after V. Talich (Prague, 1985) and Min-On (Tokyo, 1985). He has led the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and has also performed with leading orchestras around the world, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestras of Rotterdam, Dresden, Stuttgart and Copenhagen, the Berlin and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and many others. From 2001 to 2010, Nikolai Alekseev directed the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, for which he was awarded the Estonian Order of the White Star, 3rd degree, and the State Prize of the Republic of Estonia in the field of culture. From 2018 to January 2024, he served as chief conductor of the Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea, the first foreigner to hold this position.

Since 2000, Nikolai Alekseev has been the conductor of the Honored Ensemble of Russia, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and since 2022 — its chief conductor. Under his leadership, the orchestra performed all the symphonies and the German Requiem by Brahms, works by Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Mahler, Schoenberg, Messiaen and many other composers. The conductor also actively introduces the public to new works, premiering works by contemporary composers.

Nikolai Alekseev regularly conducts opening and closing concerts of the orchestra's season, performs with famous soloists and tours around the world. In the 2019/2020 season, he made overseas trips to China and Latvia. In the new season, the conductor again opened the season of the Academic Symphony Orchestra with the participation of pianist F.
