The main character is a young man, Tom Rakewell, who lives in the village. He does not have the means to marry a girl named Anne. One day he meets a certain Nick Shadow, who reports that Tom is now a wealthy man, because he received an inheritance. Together they arrive in London, indulge in revelry, Tom forgets about Anne, marries a Turkish woman, and in the end he ends up ruined and abandoned by everyone. Nick turns out to be the Devil himself, who sends madness to Tom. Unhappy Tom dies.

It seems that such content of the opera is out of date for the middle of the 20th century (the opera premiered in 1951). But this is understandable, because the composer was inspired to write it by engravings created by the English artist William Hogarth in the 18th century.

The idea of creating an opera in English appeared to Stravinsky immediately upon his arrival in the United States in the early 30s. Stravinsky conceived "Adventures" in an anti-Wagnerian spirit - like an opera of “scenes”. He planned to take the works of composers of the “gallant age” as a basis, and the story told in Hogarth’s engravings fit perfectly into his idea.

The libretto was written by Wisten Auden and Chester Colman. The opera, created according to the canons of the century before last, was not successful. In the avant-garde musical environment of that time, it looked out of place, but already in the mid-70s it still received recognition.

At the Perm Opera and Ballet Theater the opera “The Rake’s Progress” will be presented for the first time and will be performed in English with subtitles. With this performance Andrey Prikotenko makes his debut on the theatrical stage. He is the chief director of the Red Torch Theater. (Novosibirsk), as well as one of the most notable and interesting directors of our time. Above "The Rake's Progress" he worked in creative tandem with conductor Fyodor Lednev from St. Petersburg.
