A new life for Stravinsky's Les Noces at the Alexandrinsky Theatre: a unique production for the premiere's centenary
The Alexandrinsky Theatre invites audiences to a new production of I. F. Stravinsky's "Les Noces," marking the centenary of its Paris premiere in 1923. This landmark ballet work takes on a new dimension on the stage of one of St. Petersburg's most prestigious theaters.
The story of "Les Noces" begins with Bronislava Nijinska's production for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Nijinska's laconic choreography strictly followed Stravinsky's rhythm and melody, and Natalia Goncharova's set design supported this austerity. Over time, the score inspired many renowned choreographers, such as Maurice Béjart and Jiří Kylián, to create their own interpretations.
Pavel Glukhov's new version of "Svadebka" transcends minimalism, uniting the chorus and dancers in a single space. The choreographer-dramatist imbues the plot and characters with detail, adding psychological depth to the choreography. The production explores the relationships between bride and groom, husband and wife, and older and younger generations. The wedding ceremony is not only celebrated but also critically examined.
Composer Nikolai Popov's musical concept expands Stravinsky's 25-minute score with a prologue and epilogue, creating a coherent narrative. Larisa Lomakina's set design utilizes natural materials to create a dynamic performance space.
