"Mademoiselle Nitouche": A Musical Fantasy on the Stage of the Vakhtangov Theatre
This production, based on Florimond Hervé's operetta, has remained a resounding hit for over 20 years, packing houses and captivating the hearts of theater lovers.
The play's plot revolves around the double lives of a music teacher who writes frivolous operettas and a young boarding school student who dreams of the stage. At the heart of the story is the desire to be oneself, to find love and freedom in defiance of established norms. A visit from Colonel Alfred Chateau-Gibus, the headmistress's brother, disrupts the routine, while Célestin's accidentally revealed secret and Denise's offer to elope with him add intrigue and tension to the plot. Vladimir Ivanov's production is a fresh take on the classic operetta, preserving its distinctive charm, grace, witty humor, delightful vocals, and playful dancing. Vakhtangov's performance is distinguished by a light, ironic style that makes the production accessible to audiences of all ages. Starring Russian stage stars Maria Aronova as the headmistress of the Heavenly Swallows Boarding School and Anatoly Menshchikov as Non-commissioned officer Loriot. The production also features Anton Lyzo, Polina Rafeeva, Dmitry Solomykin, Nonna Grishaeva, Anna Dubrovskaya, and Valery Ushakov. The permanent cast and high-quality acting make each performance a unique event. "Mademoiselle Nitouche" is more than just a comedy; it's a story about dreams, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. The production was awarded the "Star of the Theatre" award for "Bestseller of the Season" and remains one of the most popular productions on the Vakhtangov Theatre's repertoire. The new version premiered in 2004, but its history dates back to 1944, when Ruben Nikolaevich Simonov staged the first production of the operetta. The costume designer at the time was Nikolai Akimov, and the interlude lyrics were written by Nikolai Erdman. In 1945, the play even took place on Victory Day—spectators and actors came out together to watch the fireworks, which became a symbol of unity and joy.
The play takes place on the main stage of the Vakhtangov Theatre and runs approximately 230 minutes. Tickets for the play "Mademoiselle Nitouche" are available online. Don't miss this journey into a world where every character truly dreams, loves, and fights for their happiness!
