"The Cabal of Hypocrites": Artist and Power on the Alexandrinsky Theatre
The Alexandrinsky Theatre will host "The Cabal of Hypocrites" as part of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre's tour. Mikhail Bulgakov's play, a landmark for the theatre and a life-changing one for its author, was first performed on this stage in 1936 and soon banned. Today, the production returns, maintaining the relevance of questions about creative freedom and the artist's relationship with power.
The play centers on the life of Jean-Baptiste Molière, a comedian and theatre director at the court of Louis XIV. His fate becomes dramatic material through which Bulgakov explores his own experiences and relationships with society. Actors' brotherhood, court intrigue, love and betrayal, truth and hypocrisy are intertwined in a theatrical phantasmagoria where tragedy and farce are inseparable, and the reality of the stage and life are woven into a single whole.
The new stage version of the play includes excerpts from Bulgakov's novel "The Life of Monsieur de Moliere," philosophical and religious texts by Descartes, Seneca, Berdyaev, Tolstoy, and Saint Augustine, as well as archival documents from the 1930s. This multi-layered construction reveals to the audience a fractal of time periods—from the French Golden Age to the Soviet 1930s and the present day—demonstrating the eternal paradoxes of creative life.
"The Cabal of Hypocrites" is a play about the price of freedom, the artist's responsibility, and the constant struggle with external circumstances.
