The Nutcracker – a New Year's gift from the Mikhailovsky Theatre
In his version of The Nutcracker, renowned Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato maintained a respect for classical traditions while imbuing the production with a uniquely personal vision. Together with French designer Jérôme Kaplan, he transformed the action of Hoffmann's famous tale into the atmosphere of the Silver Age, creating an elegant and spiritual world of pre-revolutionary Russia. This refined setting evokes memories of Diaghilev's evenings and the silhouettes of old Petrograd, adding a special depth and nostalgic appeal to the production.
Duato's production centers on the story of growing up and the transition from a carefree childhood to the dreams of youth. The main character, Masha, finds herself in a dream in a world where toys come to life, and an inconspicuous nutcracker becomes a handsome prince. Their confrontation with the Mouse King and his army goes beyond a simple fairy tale and symbolizes the eternal struggle between good and evil. The choreographer masterfully conveys the characters' emotional experiences through dance, emphasizing sincerity and expressiveness over complex stunts.
The performance's visual design is particularly captivating. Kaplan's sets and costumes are stunning in their beauty and originality. The Waltz of the Snowflakes transforms into a mesmerizing winter blizzard: dancers in ethereal costumes reminiscent of transparent icicles perform a magical dance. The second act transports the audience to a fantasy kingdom, where they are treated to national dances from various countries—Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian—each performed with incredible taste and imagination.
"The Nutcracker" at the Mikhailovsky Theatre is a performance for the whole family, evoking a sense of celebration and faith in miracles.
