The Nutcracker – a New Year's gift from the Mikhailovsky Theatre

In his version of The Nutcracker, renowned Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato maintained a respect for classical traditions while imbuing the production with a uniquely personal vision. Together with French designer Jérôme Kaplan, he transformed the action of Hoffmann's famous tale into the atmosphere of the Silver Age, creating an elegant and spiritual world of pre-revolutionary Russia. Duato's production centers on the story of growing up and the transition from a carefree childhood to the dreams of youth. The main character, Masha, finds herself in a dream in a world where toys come to life, and an inconspicuous nutcracker becomes a handsome prince.
