"Shukshin's Stories" at the Theatre of Nations: a performance that made history!
The production's uniqueness and success lie in the inimitable approach of renowned Latvian director Alvis Hermanis, for whom this project marks his first time working in Russia. Rather than recreate the atmosphere of a 1970s Soviet village, Hermanis and the actors immerse themselves in a game of memory, seeking to empathize with the spirit of Shukshin's "weirdos"—the simple, sincere, and sometimes comical inhabitants of the Russian provinces. To convey the authentic atmosphere, before rehearsals began, the team traveled to the village of Srostki, the writer's birthplace, to witness firsthand the lives and faces of the people Vasily Makarovich wrote about.
The production's set design is extremely simple: a wooden bench and large photo portraits of real residents of the Altai village on the walls create a sense of presence. In this minimalist space, ten of Shukshin's stories ("Styopka," "Boots," "The Wife Saw Her Husband Off to Paris," and others) come to life, transforming into a vibrant kaleidoscope of human destinies. Leading actors such as Yevgeny Mironov and Yulia Peresild masterfully transform from one character to another, balancing acting with sincere storytelling. They don't simply play roles—they live these stories, sharing them with the audience as something deeply personal.
The production is permeated with a light melancholy and good-natured humor. Beneath the veneer of laughter and irony lie eternal themes: loneliness, misunderstanding, finding oneself in a changing world, and a longing for authenticity. This language has proven universal: the production has toured around the world—from Europe to the US and China—receiving rave reviews everywhere. This proves that stories about ordinary people resonate with audiences regardless of their cultural context.
"Shukshin's Stories" is more than a performance; it is a significant theatrical event, awarded the Golden Mask and Crystal Turandot awards. It is an opportunity to touch the living legacy of the great writer and once again be convinced that his characters are the most valuable and purest manifestation of the Russian character. Tickets for the performance "Shukshin's Stories" are available for purchase on our website.
