A timeless classic on the Vakhtangov stage: why "Mademoiselle Nitouche" is always relevant
The production revolves around a charming young woman named Denise de Flavigny, who lives in the convent boarding school "Celestial Swallows." She dreams of a brilliant career as an actress. Meanwhile, the serious and pious music teacher, Monsieur Célestin, leads a double life. Outside the boarding school, he transforms into the frivolous composer Floridor, who composes racy operettas for his beloved, the prima donna Corinne. Their chance meeting outside the boarding school gates sets off a series of exciting adventures, intrigues, and comical situations that ultimately help the characters realize their dreams.
The play "Mademoiselle Nitouche" was first presented at the Vakhtangov Theater in December 1944 under the direction of director Ruben Simonov. The premiere, which took place during the war, provoked a mixed reaction from the authorities, who considered such entertainment inappropriate in such difficult times. Nevertheless, the play became incredibly popular with audiences and a symbol of an unquenchable thirst for life. It was even performed on May 9, 1945, when audience members and actors went outside during intermission to watch the Victory Day fireworks. This production became a true hit for many years and became the theater's calling card.
In 2004, director Vladimir Ivanov offered his own vision of the famous operetta. His version was a fantasy based on Hervé's work and retained the unique charm, grace, and ironic style of Vakhtangov's performance. The performance is full of delightful vocals, playful dances, and witty jokes. The new production has graced the theater's repertoire for almost two decades and has won numerous prestigious theater awards, including the "Theater Star" for "Bestseller."
The enormous success of "Mademoiselle Nitouche" is due to the brilliant performances of the actors. Over the years, such stars as Nonna Grishaeva, Alexander Oleshko, and Viktor Dobronravov have shone on the stage. Maria Aronova has consistently played the role of the Headmistress of the Boarding School for many years, delighting audiences with her skill. Her character, initially appearing in only a few scenes, has become a key character in the new version, which has added more humor and depth to the production.
Today, "Mademoiselle Nitouche" is not just a play, but a true celebration of theatrical art. This is a story about the importance of following your dreams, courage in the face of change, and the belief that behind any twist of fate lies well-deserved happiness. Tickets for the play "Mademoiselle Nitouche" at the Vakhtangov Theater are available for purchase on our website.
