Cabaret: How Luxury Dances on the Edge of the Abyss at the Theatre of Nations
The events unfold in Berlin in the early 1930s, when the Weimar Republic is living out its final days. Anxiety about impending catastrophe hangs in the air, but inside the Kit Kat Cabaret, feverish joy reigns, at times bordering on hysteria. It is here, amid the glitter and debauchery, that the romance between American writer Clifford Bradshaw and eccentric singer Sally Bowles develops. Their turbulent love becomes a symbol of a doomed world vainly trying to hide from the looming horror of Nazism behind the façade of endless celebration.
Yevgeny Pisarev's production is striking in its scale and attention to detail. Zinovy Margolin's set design creates the feeling of an unstable world, ready to collapse at any moment. Victoria Sevryukova's costumes, including authentic German lingerie of the era, not only evoke the atmosphere of the time but also play a vital role in the narrative. A live orchestra conducted by Evgeny Zagot masterfully performs hits by John Kander and Fred Ebb in English and German with Russian subtitles, preserving the energy and poignancy of the original music.
The role of the Master of Ceremonies, brilliantly played by Denis Sukhanov and Oleg Savtsov, is particularly captivating. In the Theatre of Nations version, his role is significantly expanded: he is not simply the show's host, but a multifaceted demon-tempter, manipulating the characters and the audience. His jokes and skits become increasingly sinister with each act, reflecting the approaching darkness.
A powerful and touching theme of the production is the love story between the elderly boarding house owner, Fraulein Schneider, and the fruit merchant, Herr Schultz. Their tender relationship, against the backdrop of growing anti-Semitism, lends the play special depth. This duet, performed by Elena Shanina and Alexander Sirin/Vladimir Nikolenko, becomes a symbol of moral choice in inhumane times. "Cabaret" at the Theatre of Nations is not just an entertaining musical, but a musical drama that provokes reflection on the nature of evil and the price of conformity. A grandiose choral performance of "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" culminates in the performance, plunging the audience into a silent stupor. This first licensed production of "Cabaret" in Moscow offers a new interpretation of direction, set design, and choreography, making it a significant work of art in its own right. This powerful spectacle is visually and emotionally impressive, leaving an indelible impression that life is a cabaret, but reality always remains beyond it.
