The Vakhtangov Theatre hosted the production of "Eugene Onegin" by director Rimas Tuminas
The events unfold simultaneously in the present and the past, where reality intertwines with the characters' fantasies. The director does not strive for an exact retelling of the plot, but creates an atmosphere woven from memories, dreams and barely noticeable hints.
In 2007, Rimas Tuminas took over the Vakhtangov Theatre, which marked the beginning of a new era for the famous company. He brought a fresh approach to the classics and modern drama. His repertoire included works by Chekhov, Shakespeare, Brecht and contemporary authors, which made the productions diverse and relevant. Tuminas's productions were distinguished by their visual expressiveness, use of metaphors and symbols. He created a poetic theatre, where special attention was paid to the atmosphere and emotional impact on the audience. Tuminas's productions successfully toured all over the world, strengthening the reputation of the Vakhtangov Theatre as one of the leading theatres in Russia. He breathed new life into the renowned theatre, preserving its traditions and values. His works became significant events in the cultural life of Moscow and received recognition both in Russia and abroad. Under his direction, "Eugene Onegin" became one of the theatre's most popular productions and outlived the director himself.
According to the concept of the Latvian master, from the very first minutes the audience finds itself in the world of a Russian estate, where time flows slowly, and feelings flare up suddenly and brightly. Particular attention is paid to the visual design of the performance. The artist Adomas Jacovskis creates a minimalist but expressive space on the stage, where light and colour play a key role. The costumes of the characters are made in muted tones, emphasizing their inner restraint and tragedy. An interesting solution by Jackovys - a huge mirror in the background of the stage at a slight angle - adds a magnetic effect, projecting the light and dark sides of the characters. The music of the waltz by Faustas Latenas enhances the atmosphere of the play with a melancholic mood.
The cast is impeccable: Sergei Makovetsky as the narrator Onegin acts as a wise and ironic observer of his youth; Viktor Dobronravov embodies the image of the young Onegin - a cold dandy who does not appreciate simple joys; Evgenia Kregzhde plays Tatyana - a gentle girl with deep feelings. When buying tickets for the play "Eugene Onegin" at the Vakhtangov Theater, it is worth considering the different casts.
This play leaves an indelible impression: aching sadness is combined with bright hope. He reminds us of the importance of appreciating every moment of life and not missing your chance for happiness. Tuminas's directing work is distinguished by a subtle psychological approach and attention to detail. He skillfully reveals the inner world of the characters, showing their doubts, fears and hopes. The production is devoid of unambiguous assessments; the director invites the viewer to judge the characters' motives for themselves. Buy tickets for the play "Eugene Onegin" right now!
