The production of "Mademoiselle Nitouche" at the Vakhtangov Theatre invariably attracts audiences, gathering full houses.
Director Vladimir Ivanov has masterfully updated the classic story, offering the audience a colorful, dynamic and musically rich performance. The set design of the performance impresses with its creative approach: the artists skillfully conveyed the atmosphere of France at the end of the 19th century through sophisticated costumes, carefully designed scenery and skillful use of light. Vladimir Amelin was responsible for the lighting design, and Svetlana Sinitsina created the costumes. In the performance, the actresses wear bright pink outfits, symbolizing the provincial theater in Dijon, where the heroine Denise makes her debut. The traditional hall of the Vakhtangov Theatre is decorated with terracotta velvet.
The story tells of a young girl from a Catholic boarding school, Denise de Flavigny, whose life is divided into two opposite parts. During the day she is an obedient student, and in her dreams she is a brilliant actress, thirsting for the stage and freedom. The turning point comes when her music teacher Celestin leaves for Paris for the premiere of his operetta. Inspired by this event, Denise decides to escape from the monastery and go after him. In Paris, she becomes Mademoiselle Nitouche - a young actress immersed in the world of theater with its intrigues and romantic adventures. The performance is full of witty dialogues, fiery dances and melodies that create a festive atmosphere of Paris at the end of the 19th century. Every detail is thought out to the smallest detail: even the request to turn off phones before the performance is played out in the context of the production as a request to turn off music boxes and chiming clocks.
The role of the headmistress of the boarding school is invariably played by Maria Aronova - she has played more than 500 performances without replacement. Make-up artist Olga Kalyavina created false teeth for Aronova, which significantly influenced the image of the heroine.
Aronova's uniqueness in this role lies in her exceptional ability to improvise. She does not just follow the script - she lives on stage, reacting to the lines of her partners and the mood of the audience. Each performance becomes a unique event due to her ability to adapt to the current situation in the world and the country. Her Nitush is distinguished by her sharp mind and touching humanity. In each production, Aronova relives the fate of her heroine, adding new shades and colors.
The audience feels the sincerity of her acting and genuine involvement in the material, which makes the performances with her participation extremely popular. She plays with the meaning of the text and improvises, creating a unique theatrical experience for each viewer. Such an ability to instantly react to what is happening is a sign of the high professionalism of the Vakhtangov school - a rare and valuable skill.
By the way, together with Aronova, her son Vladislav Gandrabura performs on stage as Colonel Alfred Chateau-Gibus. Do not miss the opportunity to buy tickets for the play "Mademoiselle Nitouche" on our website.
