The Russian Cup final between Rostov and CSKA will take place in a week.
The final game of the Russian Football Cup between Rostov and CSKA in Moscow's Luzhniki promises to be a spectacular event for all fans of Russian football. The final match of the Fonbet Russian Cup Regions Path ended at the Lukoil Arena stadium in the capital, where Spartak lost to Rostov with a score of 1:2, failing to advance to the decisive battle on the country's main arena. Jonathan Alba's men will once again fight for the prestigious top division trophy.
The Rostov club, founded in 1930, has gone through many trials, including name changes and periods of decline, but has always remained a significant part of the region's sporting life. Over the years, the team was called Selmashstroy, Traktor, Rostselmash, until it acquired its current name in 2003. Until recently, the team was headed by Valery Karpin, who left his post to focus on working with the Russian national team. His place was taken by Jonathan Alba, who previously worked under Karpin. In the past, the club from Rostov-on-Don reached the final of the Russian Cup twice: in 2003, they lost to Spartak (0:1), and in 2014, they beat Krasnodar on penalties (0:0, 6:5). It is also worth noting the successful performance of the team under the leadership of Kurban Berdyev in the 2015/2016 season, when they took second place in the Russian championship, losing only to CSKA, which allowed them to participate in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. Although there have been no such resounding successes in recent years, the club continues to confidently perform in the RPL.
FC CSKA is one of the most titled clubs in Russia and the former Soviet Union. Over its long history, the army team has won many prestigious awards and written its name into the history of domestic and European football. During the Soviet era, they became national champions seven times and won the USSR Cup five times. In the modern history of Russia, CSKA has also collected many trophies: six times it became the champion of Russia, seven times it won the national Cup and eight times the Russian Super Cup. The club's most significant achievement was winning the 2005 UEFA Cup, when they beat Portugal's Sporting CP 3-1, becoming the first Russian club to win this prestigious European trophy. This triumph has forever gone down in the history of Russian football. In the 2024/25 Russian Premier League season, CSKA took third place, confidently beating Nizhny Novgorod's Pari NN 2-0 in the final round and earning 59 points.
The history of confrontations between Nikolic and Alba's teams has seen 68 matches: 37 wins for CSKA and only 17 for Rostov, with a draw recorded 14 times. The goal difference is also impressive - 116 for the army team against 58 for the Rostov team.
