On May 15, the Moscow Art Theatre named after A.P. Chekhov hosted the premiere of the play "Once Upon a Time. There Was. A House."
One of the central elements of the play is its scenography. The artists created a detailed model of an old Moscow house on stage with its cracked walls, creaky stairs and cozy apartments. This is not just a decoration, but a full-fledged participant in the events, personifying the passage of time and the keeper of memory. The play includes songs by the St. Petersburg poet and artist Gavriil Lubnin, which give Tsypkin's stories a melancholic mood and unite them into a single whole.
The plot unfolds around an apartment building, where all the events take place during one tense evening, when the life of each of the characters is under threat. The stories are filled with drama, love, loss and hope. The play stands out for its emotional intensity, making the audience think about eternal values and the meaning of life: for example, how robbers and intelligent alcoholics discuss the intervention of higher powers or how a mother and an adult daughter try to improve their personal lives.
Khabensky and Tsypkin's production emphasizes the idea that every house keeps its own stories, and the destinies of people are intertwined. Viewers can see themselves or their friends reflected in the characters of the play. The themes of faith in divine powers and love experiences in different periods of life are raised. The finale of the play is unusual - viewers are invited to vote online for the most exciting story, the continuation of which they would like to hear from Alexander Tsypkin.
Konstantin Khabensky has repeatedly emphasized the importance of preserving the traditions of the Moscow Art Theater - breakthroughs and experiments in art, which the theater continues to successfully do. The play "Once Upon a Time. There Was a House." leaves a deep imprint on the memory of viewers and makes them want to watch it again.
