Mahler Symphony in the Great Hall: Resurrection with Teodor Currentzis
On March 17, the musicAeterna Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, will perform at the Great Hall of the Shostakovich Philharmonic. The program includes Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony, also known as “Resurrection.” Written for soprano, alto, mixed choir, and orchestra, this work is one of the most significant in Mahler’s repertoire and occupies a special place in the world concert repertoire.
The Resurrection Symphony begins with a dramatic Allegro maestoso, which Mahler conceived as a continuation of his First Symphony. The composer addresses philosophical and religious issues, reflecting on the meaning of life and suffering. The middle parts of the symphony are musical interludes that lead to a grand finale. In the third part, based on the song “The Sermon of Anthony of Padua to the Fishes,” Mahler depicts the meaningless seething of life. The fourth part includes the song "Primordial Light", which symbolizes the hero's desire to escape from the hardships of life.
The finale of the symphony, lasting more than half an hour, unites all the key themes of the work. After the orchestral part, the choir and two solo voices enter, performing the text that Mahler found at the funeral of his idol, conductor Hans von Bülow. These lines, supplemented by the composer's own stanzas, conclude the symphony with a powerful chord of hope and rebirth.
