Pascal Dusapin, an outstanding French composer, wrote his seventh opera, The Passion. in 2008. The premiere took place at the Aix-en-Provence festival in 2009. In 2019, The Guardian newspaper included this work in its list of the most important works of the 21st century.
The plot of the opera is based on the ancient Greek myth about the tragic love of Orpheus and Eurydice. Having lost his beloved, Orpheus descends to the kingdom of Hades to bring her back. Enchanted by his music, the lord of the dead allows Orpheus to take Eurydice, but on the condition that he does not look back. Orpheus fails the test, and Eurydice disappears into the darkness again.
Theodor Currentzis, the musical director of the production, in collaboration with director Anna Guseva, the musicAeterna orchestra and choir, will present his interpretation of this dramatic story. In Dusapin's opera, the emphasis is on the moment of farewell between two lovers, filled with drama and emotion.
