Eduardo de Filippo's play "Christmas at the House of Cupiello" dates back to the early period of the author's work. The work was written in 1931, during a very turbulent time for Italy. The political system becomes one-party, Mussolini establishes himself as the Duce and establishes a totalitarian regime. Naples. 1930s of the twentieth century. An eternally turbulent and contradictory city. Christmas Eve.  Against the backdrop of all the fuss, we see a calm image of the main character. The naive and simple Senor Luca Cuppiello makes a Christmas manger in his house. All his time and energy are devoted to this activity. To say that all other family members do not share his hobbies means to say nothing. On the contrary, it irritates everyone wildly. The wife is always unhappy and constantly grumbles at Cupiello. The son grew up to be a spoiled child and also a thief. The brother-in-law found himself without a roof over his head and is now perplexing the Cupiello family. My own daughter actually decided to run away from her husband with her lover. Everything is mixed up in this house.

Luca Cuppiello is unable to do anything about his family. Like a big child, he isolates himself from the reality of what is happening and continues to make toys with gusto. This makes his life better and easier. And none of those around him can understand his craving for this activity.
