Alexander Ostrovsky's play "Handsome Man" cannot be called a frequent guest on the stage of the Maly Theater. Its last production happened almost forty years ago – back in 1979. And now in 2019 she appears again in the repertoire. The famous director Vasily Fedorov, who has been working with the team for more than 30 years, took on the implementation of this project.

Vasily Fedorovich did not alter the play in a modern way or introduce too original ideas into it. The director considers Ostrovsky's work self-sufficient, so he offers the public a classic version of the play. The story of family life, which is described by the great playwright, was quite typical for that time. It has not lost its relevance even now. The work touches on the eternal human themes of love, money, conscience and human dignity. And the main characters themselves are quite close to the modern viewer – they are funny, cunning, energetic and touching.

In the center of the storyline our hero is Apollo Okoemov. He is actually a handsome man, an adventurer and a heartthrob. In a modern way, he can be called a macho and gigolo. The purpose of his life – money, and everything else is just things for which they can be bought. But the only “capital” is at his disposal – it's appearance. It is this that he uses to make a fortune.
